Dabu felt a bit better and more invigorated after that. But the pleasure of ranking up soon faded, leaving him in pain once again. He lay back down on his side and tried to fall asleep, but his mind refused to allow him to rest so easily, keeping him awake for many hours.

Maripi was awake by the time Dabu woke for the second time. Tokomu had done several tests to make sure the attack hadn’t damaged his brain, but it seemed everything was alright. He answered all of the questions correctly and was able to follow all of his brother’s instructions.

Still, their injuries prevented them from moving at all, and it was beyond frustrating. Both Dabu and Uhane were keenly aware of the passage of time, knowing that those they were after could very well be getting further and further away. This trip, which was supposed to only be a small detour, had been well over a month by this point and these injuries would assure it would take even longer.

One of the hardest parts for Dabu was to not grow too frustrated with himself. After four days, Maripi was ready to travel, but Dabu’s injuries prevented their group from moving on. It was difficult not to feel like the weakest link. Though he logically knew it wasn’t his fault, emotion rarely listened to something as trivial as common sense.

Uhane helped change his bandages every day. She helped him eat and drink and made sure he was comfortable when he slept. This made him feel even worse. He was grateful to his friend for doing as much as she did, but at the same time, he began to grow resentful that he was unable to do these things for himself.

Each day, he would try to push himself, to do something on his own, and each day he’d fail. The pain from his back or chest would force him back down and earn him a scolding from Uhane for pushing himself before he was ready.

Finally, on the fifth day, Dabu was able to manage sitting up on his own. By the seventh, he could stand, and by the tenth, he could walk. Still, the passage of time haunted them, as well as the knowledge that the Heavy Beast Zone would continue to climb in power. There had been several beasts that had passed their makeshift camp. Thankfully, they were well enough hidden that they weren’t spotted, but every passing day made Dabu just a bit more tense and uneasy.

Finally, after nearly two weeks, their group was ready to move. The bandages binding Dabu’s chest were no longer bloody, though they were still a bit tender. The burn was nearly completely gone, leaving just small patches of scar tissue.
